History of 3Gs

The early foundations of the Trust originated from the work and membership of 3 local Tenants and Residents Associations namely ‘New Gurnos’, ‘Old Gurnos’ and ‘Galon Uchaf’, hence the name 3G’s.

These 3 Associations worked in partnership under an ‘umbrella’ body called the Gurnos and Galan Uchaf Regeneration Partnership which subsequently became the 3G’s Community Development Trust.

Today the Trust continues to be a community-led organisation, working closely with key statutory and voluntary sector partners, principally Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and has grown to become the lead Third Sector Body in the area gaining a successful track-record in delivering a diverse range of neighbourhood-level Community Development and Regeneration Programmes.

The Trust’s mission is to enable people residing in the 3G’s area to live a better quality of life by making their neighbourhoods more cohesive, vibrant, productive, safe and sustainable places where people can work and thrive together and are proud to belong and contribute to their community. Since 2001-02, the Trust has led the delivery of the Welsh Government’s key Anti-Poverty Programme, ‘Communities First’ in the electoral wards of Gurnos and Penydarren (with the inclusion of the Dowlais Ward from February 2013).

The Trust’s current area of benefit is characterised by having the ‘highest population densities whilst also being among the most disadvantaged areas in the Borough of Merthyr Tydfil*.

The 3G’s Community Development Trust was established in August 1999 as Company Limited by Guarantee (3831737) and a Registered Charity (1100265).
